Chohan Becomes First SACA Graduate to Sign in a Global Franchise Competition

Jafer Chohan: From SACA Graduate to Big Bash League Star

At the start of 2023, Jafer became the fourth SACA graduate to sign a professional contract, joining Yorkshire after a string of impressive performances in the SACA side and a great showing in our talent showcase day at the Adil Rashid Cricket Centre. And now, less than 18 months later, he’s been selected in the BBL draft for the Sydney Sixers, one of the most prestigious T20 tournaments in the world!

Breakout Season with Yorkshire

Jafer’s rise to prominence in the cricketing world was cemented during this year’s T20 Blast, where he showcased his skill as a formidable bowler for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Over the course of the tournament, Jafer took an impressive 17 wickets at an average of just 15. His standout performance came against Durham, where he delivered a match-winning spell, taking 5 wickets for just 14 runs. This exceptional performance not only highlighted his bowling prowess but also marked him as one of the most promising talents in the domestic circuit.

Working with Adil Rashid

Through SACA, Jafer has worked tirelessly on his game under the expert guidance of England cricketer Adil Rashid and his renowned coach brother, Amar Rashid. Training at the Adil Rashid Centre in Bradford, Jafer honed his skills with Adil's invaluable insights into leg-spin bowling and Amar's specialized coaching techniques. This experience provided Jafer with a unique opportunity to learn from one of the best in the game and refine his craft under the watchful eye of an experienced coach. Their mentorship played a crucial role in Jafer's development, allowing him to elevate his game to new heights and ultimately secure his place in the professional cricketing arena.

Making History with Sydney Sixers

His signing with the Sixers marks a significant milestone for both Jafer and SACA, as he becomes the first graduate from our academy to secure a contract with a major T20 franchise. This achievement is a testament to Jafer’s ability but his story is yet another example of the incredible talent that, for whatever reason was missed in the traditional system and why it's so important to have programmes in place to provide talented players an alternative avenue into the professional game.

Looking Ahead

As Jafer embarks on this exciting new chapter in his cricketing career, we at SACA are confident that he will continue to shine on the international stage. We are excited to see him take on new challenges in the Big Bash League and showcase his talent to a global audience.

His journey serves as an inspiration to all our players and reinforces our commitment to developing the next generation of cricket stars. We look forward to cheering him on as he represents the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League and continues to make SACA proud. Congratulations, Jafer, and best of luck in Australia!
